What the headline fee actually covers
Usually: placing the order, receiving the item at the warehouse, and basic consolidation. What is bundled differs from service to service, and the fee page is the only place that says so: at Buyee, for instance, inspection and compensation sit in a separate guarantee plan (¥0–500 per order) rather than in the fee itself.
What it almost never covers: international shipping, packing materials beyond the basics, domestic shipping inside Japan, payment processing, and photos of your actual item.
What don't the fee pages advertise?
Every fact below is taken from the services' own official pages, not from reviews.
- ZenMarket: every deposit of funds costs from 1% extra — the fee page lists it under "Always pay," alongside the service fee. Items stored over 60 days accrue ¥50/day each.
- Buyee: its fee page warns that domestic shipping "may occur due to a change of shipping method, even though 'Free shipping' might be stated on the product page," and each order is processed separately — with separate domestic shipping fees — even from the same store.
- FROM JAPAN: payment is split in two. You pay Charge 1 (item price) at order time and learn Charge 2 (shipping, plan fees, extras) only later. Packages over ¥200,000 via Japan Post add a ¥2,800 export clearance fee; FedEx shipments add ¥2,710.
- Neokyo: the ¥350 fee never ships anything — packing is a mandatory separate line, from ¥500 per parcel plus ¥150 per extra kilogram.
Comparing the real total cost
Add up four lines, not one: item price → service fee → domestic costs (packing, consolidation, deposit fees) → international shipping. The honest comparison metric is the landed cost — everything you pay until the parcel is at your door.
