ReFa from Japan: shower heads, rollers, brushes and stylers
We buy ReFa in Japanese shops at the local price. Rollers and shower heads travel with no restrictions; among the dryers only two run on 220 V.
Why people buy ReFa from Japan
ReFa is a brand of the Japanese company MTG. Elsewhere the same models cost one and a half to two times more than in Japanese shops, and copies sit on the shelf next to them: MTG itself says a fake cannot be told from the original by sight.
We buy where the Japanese buy: Rakuten, Yahoo Shopping, the brand's own store. What settles authenticity is not inspecting the box but where the item came from.
What it costs and whether there will be duty
The shop price plus a 10% fee — you see that sum before paying. Shipping is counted once the order reaches the warehouse and is weighed. Duty-free is €200 and 31 kg per parcel: a roller, a shower head, a brush or an iron fit inside it, while dryers and epilators may go over — then 15% on the excess and a customs charge are added.

Rollers: microcurrent without batteries
A solar panel in the handle produces a weak current while you use the roller in the light. There are no batteries and no charging, and the roller cannot store a charge: no light, no current. Two balls at the tip roll towards each other and pinch a fold of skin, imitating what fingers do. The body is rated IPX7, so a Carat can go into the bath, though not for more than half an hour. The exception is Carat Lift: it has a battery and an EMS mode, and it does not like water.
Fine Bubble shower heads: bubbles instead of electronics
The shower head plugs into nothing and consumes nothing — it breaks the water stream into very fine bubbles mechanically. MTG states that model U produces about 14 million ultra-fine bubbles per millilitre and offers four spray modes on a slider. Model U+ adds a shut-off button on the back; the maker claims up to 49% water saved in mist mode and up to 65% with the button. Model Pure is the same head with a chlorine cartridge — one cartridge lasts one person about three months at eight minutes of showering a day.
Brushes and combs: an inexpensive accessory
The Heart Brush costs under ¥3,000 in Japan — an accessory rather than a device: a brush with rounded teeth and a mirrored handle. Pricier models exist, such as Paddle Premium and the ion brushes. It is exactly this low price and recognisable shape that make brushes the most copied item of the line.
Power decides whether an item can travel
For shipping the line splits in three. Solar-powered rollers and shower heads need no power at all. Irons, curlers and dryers run off the mains, where only the voltage matters. For devices with a built-in battery (Carat Lift, Finger Iron, Head Spa) the route decides how many travel at once: air freight is stricter, sea and land are not.

Worth knowing before you order
- Japanese appliances run on 100 V. Among ReFa dryers only BEAUTECH DRYER SMART W and BX W take 100–240 V. The rest are 100 V only and need a step-down transformer: one rated for 1,200 W weighs several kilos and costs as much as the dryer. Irons, curlers and epilators, by contrast, almost all run on both.
- Carat rollers run on a solar panel and Fine Bubble shower heads need no power at all — no questions with those. For devices with a built-in battery the limits depend on the route: air freight does not take everything, while sea and land shipping do carry them. We pick the suitable route when the parcel is packed.
- Even a 100–240 V model needs a plug adapter: Japan uses flat pins. That is a cheap part, not a transformer. MTG also warns that a device broken outside the country where it was bought is repaired for a fee, warranty or not.
- The ReFa LED mask cannot be brought from Japan: it was released for China only and Japanese shops do not carry it.
Frequent questions
How do I know it is genuine?
By sight you cannot: MTG says copies repeat both the packaging and the serial number, and the brand has no online authenticity check. Only the shop is a reliable sign — Japanese retail, not a random listing.
Will a Fine Bubble shower head fit my hose?
The thread on Japanese shower heads is made for local fittings, and adapters for Japanese systems are sometimes included. Whether it fits your hose is better asked before ordering — send us the model of your mixer tap.
Which dryers definitely work on 220 V?
BEAUTECH DRYER SMART W and BEAUTECH DRYER BX W — their spec sheet says 100–240 V. The others say AC100V, which means the Japanese grid only.
Will there be customs duty?
Duty starts past €200 and 31 kg per parcel: 15% on the excess plus a customs charge. Rollers, shower heads, brushes and irons fit within the limit; dryers and epilators may go over.
